Rational Debate re: Healthcare

I love this YouTube clip of Sen. Franken discussing healthcare with his constituents for several reasons: 1) it’s at the “great Minnesota get together” – the State Fair 2) a few of his constituents in the frame clearly didn’t vote for him (TEA Party) – but are thoughtful, considerate and listened to what he had to say 3) what Sen. Franken had to say was sensible and well articulated. I’m glad he’s my Senator and I’m glad I live in Minnesota.

Wow. As if the snickering and making of faces, like middle school boys in the back row, weren’t enough Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina had to yell “You Lie!” as the President delivered his healthcare speech to a joint session of Congress last night.

As much as Franken (in the clip above) did to serve a thoughtful and informative debate, Rep. Wilson’s outburst underscores the campaign of fear and disinformation being propagated by the Republican party. This unprecedented breach of protocol would make me sad (and a bit amazed that it was Rep. Bachmann) if I weren’t enjoying the schadenfreude so much. Rep. Wilson’s opponent’s fund raising has spiked this morning. Watch as the money rolls in here:
