Twice in the past two years, Alaska lawmakers lost congressional earmarks to build two “bridges to nowhere” costing hundreds of millions of dollars after Congress was embarrassed by public complaints over the pet projects hidden in annual spending bills.
This year, Rep. Don Young and Sen. Ted Stevens, who are Alaska Republicans, found another way to move cash to their state: Stevens secured more than $20 million for an “expeditionary craft” that will connect Anchorage with the windblown rural peninsula of Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
Now what Alaska has, budget watchdogs contend, is a ferry to nowhere.

This doesn’t surprise me. Ted Stevens is a moron.
In 2006, he criticized a proposed amendment on net neutrality by saying:
“Ten movies streaming across that, that Internet, and what happens to your own personal Internet? I just the other day got… an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday [Tuesday]. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially.
“[…] They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It’s not a big truck. It’s a series of tubes. And if you don’t understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it’s going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.”
So, what’s next if the ferry gets shot down? My guess is a series of tubes to nowhere.

We’re on a road to nowhere
How do we get this to stop? How do we get taxpayers to pay attention to all the pork that is being served on Capital Hill these days?
Lieberman and McCain had proposed a bill in 2005 after the Abramoff scandal (read in a Washington Post Article) in 1994 there were 4,000 earmarks (a nice name for pork projects that are added at the last minute) to appropriations bills in 2005 there were 15,000!
